I never thought I would go skiing on the east coast. We always joked that we could cross-country ski using the down hill slopes here on the east coast. I was a complete snob and felt that there was no way for the dinky eastern hills to even come close to the western mountains. Well, I'm here to say that I was wrong (well, kind of.) Let me back up a bit.
A friend in another office at Mason goes cross-country skiing at a place in western Maryland called Deep Creek that is basically directly south of Pittsburgh. We were talking about skiing in January and I said we should go some time. (I was thinking maybe next year.) Well, she jumped at the chance and I didn't feel like I could take it back. So I looked over my school obligations and picked this past weekend to go. It's a good thing too because I have A LOT going on in the next few weeks--basically every night. Ahhh!
Anyway, a long story short we went to Wisp. Below is a picture of the slopes. Some of them were pretty steep. Now I will say that the runs seemed a bit short, but they also went down the other side of the hill as well. They seemed pretty extensive.

Cathy drove us up to the top of the hill. Here we are under the sky lift that is going over our head. I totally laughed! People who stay in these houses can just take their skis and start from here. They do have to have a lift pass to get back up though. :)

This is a wider shot showing the lift over the road.

There wasn't enough snow for us cross-country skiers. We were really disappointed. I'm demonstrating how I would look if I were skiing. :) We took a walk around to see if there was enough snow anywhere, but there wasn't. It was also super expensive here. It would have cost me $35.00. Ridiculous!!!

Cathy and I at Wisp. We drove up Friday night and then headed to the slopes the next morning.

The scenery totally reminded me of Pennsylvania. Of course we were very close to PA. It was a really pretty drive.

We drove through a town called Accident. How funny is that! It made me really curious why they named the town Accident and why they don't change the name. You have to tell people you are from Accident. It seems a bit strange!

I loved Wisp's logo. It looked like a snowflake. We went inside to see if there was any good shopping. I SO wanted hot chocolate, but I refrained. Someday...

We headed over to a town called Oakland (in Maryland), to their ice sculpture festival. They had these beautiful ice sculptures set up all over the little town. We walked about and saw them and shopped. Yea for shopping!!! I found some really cute shoes for $5.00. What a deal!

They even had the Eiffel Tower. Yea for Paris! :)

They call me the queen at work. Here I am on my own ice throne. :)

They had a little bowling alley set up. They were using cantaloupes as the bowling ball. :)

They had created an ice fort for kids. The little kid in front had just gone down the slide. Fun stuff! We just loved that they made these things for the kids to play on.
Cathy and I had a great weekend. It was so nice to get away and not even think about school for about fifteen hours. Heaven! I really want to go back in the summer as the little towns were so charming and I would love to play in the lake. Ski-Dos here I come. :)

Looks like a fun trip. This reminds me of my few skiing trips. When I was in high school we went skiing (downhill) in Wisconsin. I loved it and did rather well. Then, I went to Utah. I went skiing with a couple of friends and told them that I did pretty well in Wisconsin, so they decided to take me on some super scary runs in UT. I about killed myself. It was soooo scary and almost ruined me for skiing. I could have killed them. I mean, anyone from UT should know that the kills in Wisconsin are probably smaller than the UT bunny hills, right? Oh, well, I learned my lesson!
Deb! How fun! It looks like you had a great time, even though you couldn't go cross country skiing.
I loved the ice sculptures. And you on the throne is awesome. You should make that into a Christmas card this year and give it to your co-workers!
Love ya, J.L
