Tom took me to California in March to meet his family and see his 'home away from home.' He is such a great planner and the trip was amazing! He picked the perfect week to go and took me to the best of California. When we got to the airport, Tom surprised me with first class tickets. It was so nice for the five and a half hour flight! We flew into LAX and got in after eleven in the morning. After getting a car and lunch we headed to the Getty Museum.
I had never been or heard of it before Tom told me about
it. Wow was I in for a treat. You park and then take a tram up to the museum.
When you get off all you see is white--buildings, stairs, grounds and
greenery with the trees. It is quite a site. The architecture was very cool--the way they used glass, curves, stone, lines, etc. It was just really cool. Kind of overwhelming. You want to see everything at once, but there is just so much to see you can't take it all in. There are many buildings on the property. It doesn't look like any museum I have ever seen.
This picture shows a few of the buildings at the Getty. This is the other side of the fountain Tom and I are sitting at above. Most of them are not connected so you walk between buildings. They have different exhibits in each building based on the style and the year. They even had a few Monet paintings. :)
They had a small sculpture garden of women. I liked this picture because it shows the sculptures and one of the buildings. I love that it's not a total box. They put it on an angle and put columns in it. Another time I would like to do their architecture tour to learn more about the design.
They have a beautiful garden for visitors. It was closed until May because they were redoing parts of the garden. If you look closely at this picture you will see that these are not trees, but a plant that has been trained to grow up these steal structures to look like trees. Very cool! You can kind of see parts of the view from this vantage point. The Getty is set up on a hill so it has beautiful views of the cities that surround it and the ocean.
This picture was taken inside one of the buildings. I love how it was all glass to look out over parts of the Getty museum. You can kind of see the fountains behind us. At one point of our trip, Tom asked me what the favorite part of our trip was. Of course meeting his family was definitely the highlight, but as per the places we went-the Getty was just amazing. I was just so taken with it.
